This blog is a interwebs-shaped repository for the stray, humorous, and largely unedited thoughts that accompany me daily as well as the random interactions that befall this yankee WAY north of King Arthur's court here in St. Andrews, Scotland. It is also, hopefully, way to stay in touch with (but not too close) family and friends as I dissertate away high up in my ivory, wind-buffeted, and brine-encrusted tower. Consumer report: Ivory, a very bad thermal insulator...
I'm sorry for the title. I was fooling around with ideas for it and now I don't know how to change it. So there it is. The term comes from the Theaetetus, a Socratic dialogue where Socrates compares himself to a midwife who assists in the birthing of ideas--helps pull them out of you!--but does not give birth himself. Some things you just have to do for yourself, I guess.
So this blog will be a record of sort of the give-and-take of moving to a new country, living in a new culture, and engaging in a new form of life. ...Or maybe grad school is the same everywhere! But either way, we'll find out. And there will be pictures. Probably. But definitely Scotch.
